The NCAA game between Alabama and Marquette was temporarily evacuated after bomb-sniffing dogs found a suspicious package at San Diego State University.

The package was detected inside a 4-by-6-inch condiment container in a vendor cart and two hours later fans were to be allowed in once security staff had taken their posts inside the arena. NCAA Marquette players were the first to take the floor for warm-ups.

NCAA fans and officials were originally told to gather behind a parking structure. Also, players and staff from Marquette spent about 40 minutes on their team bus before returning to their rooms at the Red Lion Hanalei Hotel in Mission Valley.
Shortly after 11:30am, both teams were told it was OK to leave their hotels and they arrived at Cox Arena almost simultaneously at about 11:55 a.m.
No announcements had been made, so many of them learned about the bomb alert from people calling them on their cellular phones. Meanwhile, hundreds of others continued to arrive, looking for a place to park. Authorities warned last week of a recent Internet posting discussing terrorists attacks aimed for college basketball events.
